What To Do After Your House Is Hit With The Flu

The flu came, it conquered… now what? A step-by-step guide to clearing out germs and getting everyone back to feeling their best.

What To Do After Your House Is Hit With The Flu

The flu has finally run its course, but now what? After sickness sweeps through your home, it's time to clean up and reset to keep everyone healthy. Here's your post-flu game plan:

1. Disinfect High-Touch Surfaces

Germs linger, so wipe down doorknobs, light switches, remotes, and countertops with a disinfectant. Don't forget phones and keyboards!

2. Wash Bedding Including Pillows

Swap out pillowcases, sheets, and blankets for a fresh set. Run everything in hot water to kill any lingering germs.

Pillows can harbor germs, dust mites, and sweat, so they should be washed every 3-4 months. Most pillows can go in the washing machine—here’s how:

  • Remove pillowcases and check care labels.
  • Place two pillows in the washer to balance the load.
  • Use a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent.
  • Squeeze out excess water before drying.
  • Dry on low heat with dryer balls to keep them fluffy.

If your pillow is memory foam or labeled "do not machine wash", clean it by hand:

  • Fill a tub with lukewarm water and mild detergent.
  • Submerge the pillow, pressing gently to soak.
  • Rinse thoroughly and press out excess water.
  • Air dry on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area.

3. Air Out Your Space

Open windows to let in fresh air and clear out stale, germ-filled air. Running an air purifier can also help remove airborne bacteria and allergens.

4. Replace Toothbrushes

Germs can linger on toothbrushes—replace them or disinfect with boiling water to avoid reinfection.

5. Restock Your Medicine Cabinet or Health Kits

Take inventory of what you used—cold meds, Tylenol, tissues, electrolytes—and restock so you're ready for next time.

6. Replenish Your Body

Illness can deplete essential nutrients. Stay up on key vitamins and minerals and nourish your body with healing foods like bone broth, which is rich in collagen, amino acids, and immune-supporting nutrients.

A little post-flu cleanup can go a long way in keeping your household healthy. Need health support? Stop by our pharmacy for immune boosters and more!
