Healthy Aging Starts with Healthy Skin: 5 Tips from Melissa Worthy, RN
Healthy aging isn’t about trying to stop the clock. It’s about taking care of your health today so you can continue to look, feel, and function your best in the years ahead.
For Melissa Worthy, RN, Skin Health Specialist at Connected Health, that means looking beyond any single treatment or skincare product.
“It’s about longevity. It’s prioritizing longevity in your skin health, metabolic health, and mental well-being so you can enjoy every decade to the fullest. This is different for everyone.”
When it comes specifically to our skin, many of the changes we associate with aging happen gradually—and understanding what’s happening beneath the surface can help us care for our skin more effectively.
What Happens to Our Skin as We Age?
As we get older, several natural processes begin to slow down. Melissa breaks it down simply:
“Less collagen = less volume, slower cell turnover = duller tone, and lower natural lipids = dehydration.”
Collagen helps provide structure and firmness to the skin, while healthy cell turnover helps maintain a brighter, smoother appearance. At the same time, changes in the skin’s natural oils can make dryness and dehydration more noticeable.
But these changes don’t mean healthy-looking skin is out of reach.
“The good news? We can address all three with preventative care and maintenance,” Melissa says.
The goal isn’t necessarily to look younger—it’s to support the health and appearance of your skin as it changes.
Melissa’s 3 Essentials for Healthy-Looking Skin
With countless products, treatments, and skincare trends available, building a routine can quickly become overwhelming. Melissa recommends starting with three tried-and-true essentials:
1. Wear SPF every day.
Daily sun protection is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your skin and help prevent premature signs of aging.
2. Add a Vitamin C serum.
Vitamin C provides antioxidant support and can help protect the skin from environmental stressors while supporting a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
3. Consider a retinoid.
Retinoids encourage cellular turnover and can help improve the appearance of skin texture, tone, and fine lines over time.
Most importantly? Be consistent.
A simple routine you use regularly is often more valuable than an overflowing skincare cabinet you use sporadically.
Don’t Stop Your Sunscreen at Your Face
If there’s one healthy-aging habit Melissa wishes people would start earlier, it’s expanding where they apply their SPF.
“Sunscreen application on the arms and legs, neck, and décolletage—not just the face. We often neglect the areas that actually show signs of aging the fastest!”
The neck, chest, hands, arms, and other frequently exposed areas accumulate sun exposure too. Making these areas part of your daily sun-protection routine early can help protect the skin over the long term.
Where Does Botox® Fit into Healthy Aging?
Skincare is an important foundation, but some people may choose to incorporate aesthetic treatments such as Botox® into their healthy-aging routine.
Melissa views Botox® as a preventative option because it temporarily reduces the muscle activity responsible for certain expression lines.
“By subtly softening muscle movement, we prevent deep lines from etching into the skin, helping you maintain a smooth, rested appearance without looking ‘done.’”
For Melissa, the key word is subtle. Botox® doesn’t have to mean dramatically changing the way you look. Treatment can be personalized based on your facial anatomy, goals, and preferences, with the goal of maintaining a natural, refreshed appearance.
And because everyone’s skin and goals are different, a consultation can help determine whether Botox®—or another approach—is appropriate for you.
Healthy Aging Is Personal
There isn’t one perfect skincare routine or treatment plan that works for everyone. Healthy aging may include good nutrition, movement, stress management, quality sleep, preventative healthcare, consistent skincare, aesthetic treatments—or a combination that evolves over time.
What matters is taking a thoughtful, proactive approach to the things that can support your health and confidence for years to come.
